Sojourn
The year is 1999, the world is similar to our own. The moon landing in 1969 made a startling discovery. An extra-terrestrial artifact of unknown origin. The “Doorway”, as it was known, was recovered by an international follow up Sojourn 1 mission, and brought to earth to much acclaim. Three decades of research have turned that acclaim into boredom, and the Doorway now rests in the Smithsonian. In the wake of this discovery of alien life, international tensions have subsided to a low simmer, as humanity’s eyes turn outwards.
At a special New Year’s Eve event celebrating the turn of the Century and Millenium, “A Sojourn Through The Stars”, the Doorway takes center stage as a powerful symbol of humanity’s deep and enduring longing to uncover the mysteries of what awaits us in the stars. For no matter our failures to glean understanding from the Doorway, it left us with the unassailable truth that we are not alone in the universe. This truth has left a lasting impression on the cultures of Earth, a curiosity and optimism that cannot be denied.
The ball is dropping, you are celebrating with like minded individuals a momentous change of the calendar when the lights flicker. Everything goes bright and just like that, everything you knew is gone. You find yourself in darkness broken only by pale red lighting. Quiet, isolated, but for the moment safe. Where are you? What happened? Will you survive whatever this is?
